A loose dress creates air circulation between the fabric and the skin: it's your natural air conditioning. A gandoura, a light caftan, or a flowing long dress will protect you much better from the sun than shorts and a tank top, which leave the skin to burn and the body to dehydrate. In terms of materials, the rule is the same as for men: cotton and linen, nothing else. Synthetic fabrics stick, retain perspiration, and turn into a sauna by midday. Choose light colors — white, sand, ecru — that reflect light instead of absorbing it. For bottoms, flowing cotton pants protect against chafing on camelback and the cold of the evenings.
